Our stories, in our own words.

Every family has stories that deserve to be heard—the memories that make us laugh, the experiences that shaped us, and the details we want the next generation to know.

A griot is a storyteller and keeper of history in many West African cultures, passing down stories, genealogy, and traditions through spoken words and music. They keep the ancestors' memories alive through truth-telling and reverence.

That’s the inspiration behind our project: telling our family’s stories in our own words so they can be remembered and passed along.

The Blackmon Griot Project is a family interview initiative that captures those stories through recorded conversations. Inspired by the West African tradition of griots as storytellers and keepers of history, this project gives our family a place to share and preserve our own history.

We’ll talk about childhood, the people who influenced us, family traditions, memorable moments, and life lessons. Together, these conversations will help future generations get to know the people behind the names and photographs.

Your story belongs here.

We invite family members of every generation to participate. You don’t need to prepare a speech or remember every date. Come as you are, with the memories and experiences you’d like to share.

You might tell us about:

  • Growing up and the places you called home
  • Parents, grandparents, siblings, and cousins
  • Sunday dinners, family gatherings, and everyday moments
  • Lessons you learned and advice you’d like to pass along
  • Family photographs and the stories behind them

Share what feels comfortable. You can skip any question.
